Metal Barns
The modern barn has evolved past its humble beginnings. Historically, a barn was a moldering wooden structure. It was painted red and stood for a few decades before crumbling beneath termites and rot. Now, the metal barn is built to last a lifetime, with a cold-formed steel frame and reinforced panels that are certified to withstand extreme weather.
A metal barn from Liberty Metal Structures is engineered with clear span space, allowing the interior to be a flexible workspace. Livestock, crops, and equipment can be stored in enclosed areas or open lean-tos; designs can incorporate one side for an office and leave the center open for a walk-through. With so many custom options available, your new barn will be a versatile structure for generations!

Beautiful Barns: Every Size & Style
Metal Barns are quickly becoming the standard for farmyards across the country, thanks to the durable and reliable nature of cold-formed steel. However, not all farms have the same needs. Barns should be as versatile as their owners, able to adjust to the demands of livestock, crops, and equipment. Thanks to the wide variety available in our inventory and the custom options at Liberty Metal Structures, you can find the barn you deserve at a price you’ll love!
Metal Barns: Roof Styles
Metal Barns are designed for stability and durability, but your roof style will be a significant factor in your barn’s ability to withstand extreme weather. Depending on your climate and location, our experts recommend different panel installation or framing, so read on to discover which roof is best for you.
Vertical barn roofs from Liberty Metal Structures have the highest certification in the industry, expertly certified for up to 140mph winds and 35psf snow loads. These roofs are installed with vertical panels, which guide debris and snow directly toward the ground. Recommended for areas that experience any kind of severe weather, the vertical roofs are backed by long-term warranties.
The A-frame, or “boxed-eave” style, is a roof engineered to withstand moderate weather, including high winds. Structurally, it features a traditional shape with horizontal steel panels. It is not recommended for areas that experience very heavy rain or snow.
The regular roof is a standard purchase for areas with mild weather. It provides protection from UV rays, rain, and mild stormy weather. It is recognizable for its curved edges and horizontally installed steel roof panels. This option, while the cheapest option, is only recommended for areas with a very temperate climate.

Browsing Barns: Build What You Want
Whether you need a stable structure – literally! – or storage for your equipment, metal barns are versatile and flexible enough to fit every farm. At Liberty Metal Structures, we’re sure to supply the barn you need with our wide range of designs and our custom options.
Horse Barn
A metal horse barn is the safest structure for your beloved horses. Rated with the highest, Type I, rating from the International Building Code (IBC) for fire-resistance, steel is also prized for withstanding rot and mildew. It’s engineered without the use of toxic chemicals and won’t ever leech dangerous particulates into the air, thus, providing better indoor air quality than timber structures.
Storage Barn
When it comes to storage, there’s nothing safer or more durable than a steel structure. 14-gauge steel frames are certified to withstand up to 140mph winds, and up to 35psf snow loads, so you can confidently store your crops or equipment in your metal barn. You’ll find that your insurance company has a lot of confidence in steel construction, too; call, and you’ll discover that metal buildings have much lower premiums than their traditional wood competitors.
Lean-to Barn
Not every farm project requires fully enclosed coverage; that’s why we offer a wide range of designs and plans, including our lean-to options. A lean-to is a covered space with open sides, and the enclosed paneling is up to you. Drive your tractor straight through your added lean-to space while designing the other end of your barn as a fully enclosed office. The fact is, with all our custom options, the only limitation to your barn is your imagination.
Custom Barn
Your farm deserves a barn as unique as you! Thanks to the explosive growth of the metal building industry, complex metal architecture is only a click away. The step-down barn, also known as “drop-down”, is defined by its architectural appearance, with the roof marginally separated at two places. This provides the triple roof appearance that is commonly associated with barn styles. The steel frame is customizable with paint, trim, windows, and doors, so talk to one of our friendly associates about your needs, today!
Raised Barn

Finish the edges with decorative J-trim and choose from over a dozen colors to complement the other structures on your property. This beauty is sure to impress the livestock and your neighbors.
50×51 Continuous Roof Barn
The continuous roof barn is designed with long paneling, unlike the drop-down barns seen in other parts of our inventory. Customize it with garage doors, lean-to sides, walkouts, or windows. The dimensions, 50x51, give your farm enough storage for all the crops and livestock without sacrificing space you need for an office and workshop.
48×21 Prefab Barn
If you are the master of the DIY, then consider our lovely, prefabricated barn! You’ll find every panel and piece of hardware in our expertly engineered kit, and you won’t have to wait around for a crew to install it. You’ll discover that prefab kits are heavily discounted, and this barn may be the perfect fit for you.
36×20 Lean-to Barn
Not every part of your barn needs to be fully enclosed; that’s where the lean-to design is a fantastic option. When you’re looking for an outdoor workspace or a simple covering for your farm equipment, the lean-to is an affordable custom option for your structure. You can enclose a single side and choose whichever color suits your taste with a twenty-year rust-through warranty.
36×25 Drop-Down Steel Barn
The 12x25 center section of this drop-down steel barn can be customized with beautiful gables (triangular steel reinforcements beneath the roof). The center height is 12’, allowing clearance for an RV, a horse trailer, or any number of vehicles. Customize your side enclosures for storage or livestock, depending on your farm needs.
48x31 Fully Enclosed Barn Building
Our fully enclosed barn is a modern marvel of energy efficiency. Metal buildings usually save up to 30% in energy costs, so if you’re looking to insulate and use part of your structure for a workshop, you’ll be glad you chose a metal barn. Check with your insurance company and discover the difference in your premiums between a metal barn and a traditional wood structure! Steel is rated in the highest category by the International Building Code for its fire-resistant and mold-resistant properties.
36x26 Red Barn Building
If you love the traditional appearance of the old red barn, then we present our beautiful 36 x 26 red barn building. Customize with white J-trim for that elegant old-world appearance and talk to our experts about additional windows and doors. Your barn will draw the eye and impress your guests when you trot your horses beneath the 15’ high center roof. Order yours today!
Preparing for Your Purchase: Get Ready for a Metal Barn
Once you’ve fallen in love with the perfect barn, you may feel overwhelmed by the preparation process. There are a lot of factors to consider! Don’t worry, because our friendly professionals are here to help you every step of the way. From zoning codes to anchors, from permits to soil surveys, we’re here to provide encouragement and expert advice.
First, call your local building office. Depending on their requirements, you may need to purchase a particular model. Some counties have restrictions on height, width, or material. Ask your local inspector for a point-by-point plan to efficiently navigate the process, so you can obtain any necessary permits quickly.
Second, consider your farm’s unique needs. Should your barn be near water for the livestock? Will a soil engineer need to survey the site and tamp the soil? Some other considerations:
- Do you have any items that can turn sour if stored in the open air?
- How much do you have in your budget for barn maintenance?
- What are the climate conditions in your area? Will they affect which roof you should use?
- What special permission does your area require for metal barns? (Get those permits!)
Finally, see what our site has to say about foundations and choose the best one for you and your barn. Have a professional pour your concrete or have your gravel delivered early so that it can settle. Ensure that all debris is cleared away from your site before installation day.
Understanding Dimensions
When you’re shopping online, it’s hard to imagine what the dimensions will encompass. It can be tempting to choose the largest and tallest building your budget will handle, but how much space does your property allow? Grab your tape measure and do a small survey. The reality of a building can be very different than the idea; here are some tips to assist you:
Begin by measuring your outdoor space. You may think that you want a barn as big as all outdoors, but when it comes time to maneuver the tractor around it, you’ll find that encroaching on the garden space is inconvenient. Mark some basic dimensions with painter’s tape and add a few items inside to test storage capacity. For example, an average one-bedroom apartment, with appliances and furniture, is able to fit into a 10x10 storage space. The storage industry recommends 10x30 for an entire four-bedroom household. While those measurements may sound small, explore your own items and space and see what a proposed 30x30 building can accommodate. The most popular models in metal buildings are 40x80; that’s an incredible amount of clear span space!
Site Preparation & Installation
The Boy Scouts of America live by a simple motto: “Be Prepared”. When it comes time for your building to be delivered and installed, you’ll want to follow that sage advice. To ensure the long-term structural integrity of your new steel structure, there are several steps in the preparation process:
Choose the right location for your metal barn
Experts recommend a site that is slightly higher than the surrounding area for drainage purposes. Choose an area that is away from trees and other structures, as limbs may scratch through the paint on new steel panels and cause rust concerns. Depending on whether your livestock needs access to water, or your workshop needs utilities, plan your site accordingly.
Get the permission for installation of your barn
Research and have all the necessary permits before your delivery day! Some zoning codes require a permit to be posted at the installation site. Contact your local building office to ensure that you are complying with all local codes; our experts are happy to help!
Remove the debris
Your installation cannot begin if there is any debris or detritus on the work site! In fact, you should have the surrounding area cleared as well, so that it is easy for your crew to maneuver around the structure as they work. All vegetation, including grass, must be cleared away. If your site is unready, you may be charged a return fee. Installation cannot move forward without a clear site.
Prepare your soil
Consult a professional soil engineer about your soil composition. Some properties may need a certain foundation to benefit their structure, or a particular drainage system. Your metal building has a frame designed to last for decades; ensure that it has the groundwork to last even longer.
Decide on the foundations you want to build barn
There are a few options when it comes to foundations. The most popular and durable option is concrete. Our experts recommend you have a professional pour a concrete foundation, as they can take appropriate measures regarding temperature and humidity. If you prefer the appearance of asphalt, you’ll find that it is cheaper, but it requires yearly sealant to prevent cracks. Gravel can be used as a budget option, but you’ll want at least two layers tamped down before installation. If you think you can get by with a soil foundation, please consult an engineer and our experts before installation.
Metal State: Steel vs. Wood
When you’re ready to purchase a barn, the traditional wood style can be tempting. After all, the word ‘barn’ conjures up images of weathered, red buildings that creak in the wind. Perhaps, the sagging wood and mildewing smell are a part of treasured memories. Unfortunately, as an owner, the upkeep on a wood structure is significantly higher than the maintenance on a high-grade steel building. In fact, there are many areas in which metal buildings are considered more durable, more energy-efficient, and more affordable than wood.
Lower construction costs
In 2021, the cost of lumber rose 30% in just three months! As mills around the country shuttered or slowed, timber construction became prohibitively expensive. Metal buildings, on the other hand, have consistently been more cost-effective, per square foot, than their stick-built counterparts.
Faster construction times
Time is money, and metal buildings can be installed 30%-50% faster than an old school wood building. When your business or farm is ready for its next venture, you don’t have months to wait for a barn. Lead times in the metal building industry are as low as six weeks!
Less maintenance
Unless you enjoy paying for termite inspections, yearly wood sealant, and constant shingle repair, it’s time you purchased a metal building. Wood buildings disintegrate, suffer from rot, and crumble over the course of twenty years. Steel frames are built to last a lifetime, require minimal upkeep, and won’t ever invite pests to feast.
Metal barns are versatile
Versatility and flexibility are the names of the game with metal buildings! Engineered with clear span design, no interior pillars will hamper your projects. Utilities and workshops will be safe in the fire-resistant metal interior. You can rest assured your crops will be housed in the energy-efficient climate of your steel barn. Where wood will rot and mold, metal will last for decades.
Multipurpose Metal: Your Versatile Metal Barn
A metal barn is so much more than the humble cow shed of history. This modern, clear span space can be transformed into your latest hobby shop, your meditation space, you workout studio, or your reception hall. With hundreds of square feet of clear span space, the limitless ideas are sure to make your metal building your new favorite place to create!
Utilize them as Residential storage
Don’t clutter your garage and closets with holiday decorations and mementos when you have climate-controlled storage in your expertly sealed barn. The energy efficiency of metal buildings will relieve your mind; with a minimum of insulation, you’ll find that every photo and antique chest will be safely stored in your new metal barn.
Utilize them as Boarding Facility
Livestock and animals love the comfort of metal structures. Never fear that wind will whistle through the cracks or fluctuating temperatures will annoy your furry friends; in the metal barns from Liberty Metal Structures, you’ll find comfort, stability, and safety. Expand your farm business by offering boarding in your new, stylish, customized barn.
Utilize them as Farming/Agriculture
Your days of cramming farm equipment into tight spaces are over! With the clear span space of our wide metal barns, you can store every baler, trailer, truck, ATV, and still have room to customize storage for your crops. Add a workshop with windows and doors for your tools and bench or create the perfect stable for your livestock. Add a lean-to for the tractor and a climate-controlled space for next year’s seed. Our barns are customized for you and your farm!
Utilize them as Greenhouse
Customize your barn with windows, windows, windows! Create the greenhouse of your dreams with our 3D visualizer and spend your winters cultivating your favorite vegetables and flowers. Our expertly sealed installation guarantees you’ll have a warm interior for your buds!
Utilize them as Workshop

With an International Building Code rating of Type 1 (the highest rating) for safety, steel is the best in non-combustible and non-flammable construction material. Never fret over those welding sparks again, and splatter paint to your heart’s content on the cement floor. This is your workshop, and it is as tough as you!

If you can dream it, we can build it! With our fantastic 3D visualizer, every custom option is at your fingertips. See your building from every angle, in every color, and with every trim. With the click of a button, you can design the custom metal building of your dreams.
Sizes
One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to your custom metal barn. Measure your property and decide on general dimensions before you start shopping. You want a building that will fit well, without crowding trees or other structures. At Liberty Metal Structures, we have so many sizes, we’ll be sure to have a building that meets your needs.
Colors
Choose from over a dozen different paint colors, each one backed by our twenty-year rust-through warranty! Complement your home or match your latest vehicle with a paint that will be stylish enough to please any HOA. Our galvanized steel panels will be the envy of the neighborhood once you’ve chosen a paint color for them.
Panels, doors, and windows
Will your barn have an open-air side? Do you prefer a full enclosure? You can add an extra walkout or a beautiful overhead door. Don’t forget that windows can create the perfect atmosphere for an office, a greenhouse, or a workshop. You can add or remove these options using our incredible 3D visualizer.
Trims and anchors
When you are admiring that extra polished look on the custom models, you’re probably noticing the elegant J-trim. J-trim covers the sharp angles of the steel frame and gives your steel structure a refined appearance. Gables can also elevate your aesthetic; gables are the triangular piece of steel you see beneath the roof. If either of these options appeal to you, you’ll be pleased to discover that they are custom options for all our barns!
If you are concerned about high winds or severe weather in your area and would like to purchase more anchors for your structure, we have a wide variety to offer.
Gauges
The standard steel gauge in the metal industry is 14-gauge, which is durable enough to withstand most continental U.S. weather conditions. However, we do offer 12-gauge steel structures, which are more highly rated for strength. If you have questions regarding the necessity of 12-gauge steel, please call one of our experts.
Roof Style and Location
Depending on the climate and weather patterns in your area, you may wish to choose a particular roof for your barn. The regular roof has curved edges and is recommended for areas that will see temperate weather. The reinforced A-frame, or “boxed-eave” is expertly rated to withstand high winds but isn’t recommended for areas with intense rain or snow. The strongest roof in our inventory is the vertical roof, which is an excellent option for locations that experience heavy snow loads and severe weather.
Lean-to Option
The lean-to is an excellent, affordable addition to any structure. It provides a durable canopy, protecting your equipment from UV rays, rain, and hail. All the while, it allows an excellent area for outdoor projects, where airflow and ventilation are a priority. Consider adding a lean-to to your barn!
Certification & Permits
When shopping for the perfect metal building, always choose a certified metal building. Some manufacturers will try to cut a deal with uncertified buildings, but these structures are not reinforced or rated for the weather. Uncertified buildings can also cause a future headache; when it comes time to sell your property, you may face fees or a delay in sale due to the presence of uncertified structures. At Liberty Metal Structures, our certified buildings come with warranties and steel reinforcements, proving the confidence we have in every quality product. Don’t settle for anything less than the best. Purchase a certified metal structure today!
Permits & Research First!
When you’re ready to purchase a metal barn for your property, don’t press the ORDER button without doing your research first! Call your local building office to find out what codes your building must meet; some jurisdictions have limitations on size and materials. Whatever your local inspector requires, we can design a building to meet your municipality’s expectations. Some HOAs will have limitations on color and design, so be sure to call your local board, if you have one.
Some of the research can be done online, with a simple web search. You’ll want to know which permits to obtain before delivery and installation. Some building offices require permits to be posted on site or ask that a soil engineer survey your property before the foundation is laid. Whatever the red tape is, follow it to the letter; if you attempt to construct a building without proper clearance, you may be forced to tear it down and begin again! Once all your paperwork is in order, the building process will be quick and easy.
